Help & FAQ for customers

Booking, tracking and paying for trusted local trades, answered in plain English. Can’t find it here? A real person reads every message.

A customer using the Tap a Tradie app at home while a tradie works in the background
How do I book a tradie?

There are two ways. Post a job from the Home tab. Choose the service, describe the problem, add photos and pick the days that suit you, then local tradespeople send you quotes to compare and accept. Or browse the Find map, open a company’s profile to see reviews, verified certificates and warranty cover, and book them directly.

The price you accept is the price you pay. Our £12 booking fee (£10 plus VAT) is shown as its own line, so there is nothing to add on top.

How are tradespeople checked?

Everyone on Tap a Tradie proves their qualifications before they can take jobs. Photo ID is verified by Stripe as part of setting up payouts. Safety cards like Gas Safe and OFTEC, a sole trader’s UTR and a limited company’s Companies House details are checked by Tap a Tradie admins against the evidence uploaded and marked Verified. Other certificates, DBS checks, insurance (where the tradie has provided it) and warranties are declared by the business under our terms, dated and marked Declared. If a verified certificate is renewed or changed, that tradesperson’s jobs pause until the new card has been checked too.

What's an urgent callout?

When something can’t wait, like a leak or no heating, request an urgent callout and we alert available tradespeople near you, live on the map. You see each tradesperson’s callout price and hourly rate before you accept anyone. The callout fee is charged when your tradie sets off, and time on site is billed at their hourly rate when you sign the job off. Cancelling is free until your tradie sets off; once they are on the way the callout fee is kept for the wasted trip, and nothing more is charged.

How do I know when my tradie is arriving?

Once they set off you can track them live on the map, like a delivery, and you can see their name and photo so you know who to expect. At the door they ask for your 5 digit arrival code. It’s shown on the job screen and starts the job, so only share it once they’re with you.

How does payment work?

Your card is saved securely with Stripe when you book. We never see the number. When the work is done your tradie asks you to review and sign off in the app. Your card is only charged once you sign, never on a timer, and your receipt lives in the app afterwards. Your contract for the work is with the tradesperson’s business; Tap a Tradie takes payment on their behalf and the receipt shows both.

What about warranties on the work?

Every tradesperson gives at least a 12-month workmanship warranty, and can offer up to 36 months, and declare it under our terms; it forms part of their terms with you. You can see the cover before accepting a quote, and once a job is signed off the job screen shows how much warranty is left, counting down from your sign off date.

Can I cancel or reschedule a booking?

Need a different time? Request a reschedule from the job and your tradie confirms before anything changes. Rescheduling is free for both of you right up to the appointment. Cancelling is free before a tradie accepts, and free with more than 48 hours notice. Inside 48 hours it’s half the price you accepted, and on the day the full price, plus the £12 booking fee. The app always shows the exact amount before you confirm. You also have a 14 day right to change your mind after accepting a quote, which ends once the work has been fully carried out. You get 5 free cancellations of accepted bookings and 2 of urgent callouts in any rolling 30 days. If your tradie asks to move a booking and the new time doesn’t suit you, declining lets you cancel completely free. If your tradie fails our identity checks or cannot attend, you are not charged and any booking fee is refunded; genuine emergencies are handled by support.

What if my tradie doesn't show up?

Report it from the job screen. The job is frozen while our team reviews, you’re helped to rebook, and any callout fee you paid comes back to your card automatically. The refund shows on the job and on your receipt, and reaches your bank in 5 to 10 working days. No shows count against the tradesperson’s standing on Tap a Tradie. You’re never charged for a visit that didn’t happen.

How do referral codes work?

Share your code from You, then Refer a friend. When a friend signs up with it and their first job is paid, £5 comes off the booking fee on your next standard service booking automatically. There’s no voucher to remember.

Something went wrong on a job. Who do I talk to?

Report it from the job screen. Every report opens a private case with our team and you can chat with us live from Your reports. Serious problems freeze the job while we look into it, and nothing is charged until it’s resolved.
